Melanio Oliva first began growing tobacco in Pinar del Río, Cuba, in 1886. His operations were temporarily suspended while he fought in Cuba’s War of Independence, but upon returning home, Melanio resumed his work in the tobacco fields.
In the early 1920s, Melanio’s son, Facundo Oliva, took over the family’s growing operations. For several decades, Facundo cultivated the Oliva family fields, carrying on a tradition that had become deeply rooted in their heritage. His journey took him across the globe, from Honduras and Panama to Mexico and even the Philippines. Ultimately, Gilberto found the ideal conditions in Nicaragua. Today, Gilberto, together with his family, continues the Oliva legacy and ranks among Nicaragua’s largest growers of Cuban-seed tobacco.
