Matilde, founded in Santiago de los Caballeros in 1876, disappeared in the early 1900s. It was among the first tobacco businesses in the Dominican Republic. After retirement, José Seijas, accompanied by his sons Enrique and Ricardo, sought to create the perfect cigar on a smaller scale. The line they launched - Matilde Renacer, meaning rebirth - was awarded a 92 rating by Cigar Aficionado in 2014 and included in their Top25 list.
The Renacer is medium bodied, and offers notes of pepper, leather, and wood. It has an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, that covers a Dominican binder, and both Dominican and Nicaraguan filler.
